Overview

Angola is located on the southwestern coast of Africa, bordered by Namibia to the south, Zambia to the east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north. It has a coastline along the South Atlantic Ocean extends for nearly 1,000 kilometers. With a land area of approximately 1,246,700 square kilometers, Angola is one of the largest countries in Africa. The country is known for its vast mineral and petroleum reserves, making it one of Africa’s major oil producers. However, Angola has faced significant challenges in coping with the physical, social, and political aftermath of a 27-year civil war that lasted from 1975 to 2002, following its independence from Portugal. Despite these challenges, although it is highly uneven, Angola’s economy has experienced rapid growth. The oil sector has significantly contributed to this growth, but efforts have been made to diversify the economy, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and services. The country’s growth accelerated in 2022, with a GDP growth rate of 3.5% due to a slight rebound in oil production and high revenues. Angola has a rich cultural heritage, with a strong emphasis on regional or tribal identities among its diverse population. Traditional art forms such as music and dance play a significant role in the cultural expression of Angolans. Soccer is the most popular sport in the country, enjoyed by people of all ages. While Angola continues to face various challenges, there have been efforts towards political stability, economic development, and social progress in recent years.
