Overview

The Central African Republic (CAR) is a landlocked country located in the heart of Africa. It has a rich history that dates back thousands of years, with the earliest inhabitants being the ancestors of the Aka (Pygmy) peoples who reside in the western and southern forested regions. The area was later occupied by the slave state of Dar al-Kuti before coming under French colonial rule in the late 19th century. After gaining independence in 1960, the country experienced periods of civil strife, dictatorial government, and even the notorious regime of Emperor Bokassa I, who renamed the nation the Central African Empire. However, the CAR eventually transitioned to a multiparty republic with a democratic course. Despite its abundance of natural resources like diamonds, gold, oil, and uranium, the country struggles with widespread poverty, making it one of the poorest nations in the world. Ongoing instability, including interethnic conflicts and power struggles, continue to pose challenges to the Central African Republic as it strives for peace, development, and social progress.
